Practice as Process

As the world confronts unprecedented challenges—climate change, migration, and the consequences of resource extraction—designers are increasingly called upon to rethink not only what they create, but how and why they create it. The urgency to respond requires methodologies that are not only systemic but regenerative, acknowledging the complex interdependencies between land, culture, and policy. More than ever, design must shift from a linear process toward one that embraces the act of creation itself as an ongoing, dynamic inquiry.
In Unfolding: Process as Practice, BothAnd Group invites us into their process. Rather than presenting only finished works, the studio opens the scaffolding of their practice, offering us a glimpse into the very fabric of their design thinking. The exhibition, a spatial essay in its own right, presents a wall of research—fragments of references, fieldwork, images, maps, and theoretical frameworks. Here, completed projects are depicted amongst and alongside research materials, emphasizing that knowledge is not a static end but a fluid, ever-evolving resource, reimagining the ways in which we understand space, place, and the world.
This research wall acts as a living archive—a collection of thinking, testing, and reworking that shapes BothAnd Group’s approach to design. It foregrounds process and collaboration as central to their work, inviting visitors into an active space of inquiry rather than a presentation of fixed outcomes.
Central to BothAnd’s practice is a commitment to systems thinking and a focus on land as both site and collaborator. Their ongoing investigations into indigenous land management practices and global food systems are integral to their regenerative architectural and landscape strategies. These themes are explored further in the video The Landscape Rehearsals, which depicts contemporary landscapes in Nigeria’s Ogun State—specifically in Ijebu Itele and Ijebu Ife—where the indigenous land management practices of iroro(farming) and makiyaya (pastoralism) are explored. These practices offer striking parallels to roinn dáil, the pre-Famine Irish system of collective land use, reflecting BothAnd’s interest in shared principles of stewardship across cultures.
Unfolding prompts us to rethink design as a continuous, collaborative process. It highlights design’s potential not as a set of fixed solutions, but as a tool for learning, adaptation, and critical engagement with the urgent challenges shaping our world.

About BothAnd Group.
BothAnd Group. is a research-based design studio investigating the social, ecological and political forces that shape rural territories. We uncover, design for, and translate these concerns through our work in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and exhibition. Our work has been exhibited at both La Biennale Architettura 2023 and the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2022. Our ongoing investigations include an examination of global food landscapes and indigenous land management practices. BothAnd Group is Jarek Adamczuk, Alice Clarke, Andrew Ó Murchú and Kate Rushe.
