Food systems and climate change are inextricably connected. Loss of arable land due to overexploitation, global warming, conflicts and global homogeneity in food consumption threaten food security around the globe. However, due to industrialization, food models today still operate in a mode of abundance. This results in unsustainable production, processing, and consumption and insufficient or unequal distribution. One third of all the food that is produced globally for human consumption, goes to waste. When food is wasted, the energy and the resources used to produce, process, package and transport it to the markets are also wasted. At the same time, food in landfills contributes highly to greenhouse gas emissions because while it dissolves, it produces methane.
FoodCloud is a food sharing hub that is meant to be placed in vacant lots in every city and aims to benefit the neighborhood socially and environmentally with food redistribution. Food surplus from the households and the local stores can be donated either by visiting the hub or by requesting a pick-up by bike through the FoodCloud app. Afterwards, the collected items are being checked and sorted and either moved to the store, to the kitchen or to the storage. The store offers all items on an exchange model. The kitchen prepares every day a menu, offered at a very low price to ensure that the hub is self-sufficient. The leftovers are being composted and then used as fertilizer for the small garden. People can go to FoodCloud to donate food that they don’t need, enjoy a well-prepared meal with friends and neighbors, take an item that they need, participate in workshops or volunteer to cook for the neighborhood. There is always access to drinkable water and to a toilet.
FoodCloud aims to reuse the leftovers in a resource-efficient way, create a social space for the neighborhood and reevaluate our current food consumption models.
